  • MILWAUKEE TO HOST 2002 WIBC

    Runnerup in 2001 voting selected
    as site for Tournament/Annual Meeting

The City of Milwaukee is elated, the Milwaukee Women's Bowling Assn. is overjoyed and the Women's International Bowling Congress, which always is pleased when a city is announced to host its tournament, should be forgiven if it is smiling a little brighter.
Milwaukee has been announced as host of the 2002 WIBC Championship Tournament and Annual Meeting. The event, which will be held in the spring of 2002, will attract approximately 45,000 bowlers from North America and worldwide to Milwaukee over a two·month period.
"We are going to be great hosts," promised Milwaukee Women's Bowling Assn. Secretary Kandy Birmingham. "I will put people up in my own home, as long as it's only one a night. We are thrilled and excited. It was great to get the bid. The women are going to have so much to do with the new Miller Park Stadium, our wonderful restaurants, theatres, clubs and events at the zoo. It is a great time of year to be visiting Milwaukee."
Milwaukee earned the selection as the only city to submit an invitation by the June 1 deadline. The city was runnerup to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in WIBC Convention delegate voting in April in Reno, Nev. for the 2001 Tournament/Convention. Following the delegate decision in Reno, Milwaukee renewed its invitation for 2002.
"Milwaukee has long been known as the bowling capital of the world and we are very excited to have our tournament in our own backyard," said WIBC Executive Director Roseann Kuhn from WIBC's headquarters in the Milwaukee suburb of Greendale.
"The Milwaukee WBA did a great job in promoting the city and they are to be congratulated. We know they've been waiting a long time for this as the Tournament was last here in 1977."
"We're thrilled that WIBC has chosen Milwaukee to host its 2002 Tournament and Convention," said Bill Hanbury, President and CEO of the Greater Milwaukee Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Bowling and Milwaukee go hand-in-hand and we are excited to be bringing this event home."
Next year, Indianapolis in 1999, Reno, Nev. in 2000 and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
